Seen on CBS: photographs of mistreated Iraqi inmates
04.29.04 (5:11 am)   [edit]
Seen yesterday evening on CBS: the photos of mistreated Iraqi inmates by US soldiers. According to CBS, an army's inquiry has revealed this behaviour as rampant in US army.

General Mark Kimmit has declared that six soldiers are being prosecuted by a martial court, for mistreatment in Abu Gharib jail.

The photos are showing Iraqis coerced to stay awake on a box, the head recovered and the hands attached. Soldiers have told him that he would be electrocuted if he would happen to fall down.

Another photograph shows inmates naked and piled up, with an insult written in english on the body of one of them. Kimmit declared he was stunned.

One of the soldiers incriminated, Chip Frederick, wrote in an e-mail to his family: "We are contributing to make them speak by the way we're looking after them."

Iran Cautions World Against Israeli Nuclear Arms
04.29.04 (3:43 am)   [edit]
Iran's Deputy Foreign Ministry for legal and international affairs Gholamali Khoshroo criticized the nuclear powers for their refraining from fulfilling their commitments and said the Zionist regime posed the most grave threat to all Middle Eastern countries as well as the international peace and security.

The deputy foreign minister further referred to US active support for the Israel's nuclear programs as a dark record which jeopardizes all international efforts to monitor and check the Zionists' atomic activities.

Chief UN nuclear inspector Mohamed ElBaradei will in July visit Israel, which has refused to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is believed to have up to 200 nuclear weapons, to promote a "nuclear weapon-free zone" in the Middle East.

Gabriella Gafni, Israel's ambassador to the IAEA which ElBaradei heads, told AFP the visit was on for July but said the agenda has not yet been set. IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said it would be ElBaradei's first trip to Israel in six years and that he would be carrying out his mandate from the 137-member agency "to promote non-proliferation and a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East."

ElBaradei's trip will follow the release from prison this month of Israeli nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu.

The one-time technician at the Dimona nuclear plant in southern Israel was jailed in 1986 after leaking details of the plant to a British newspaper.

Vanunu has become a hero of the anti-nuclear movement and says Israel should rid itself of nuclear weapons and open up Dimona to international inspection.

Israel is a member of the IAEA but not a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which the IAEA is mandated to enforce. Israel is thus not a subject of IAEA surveillance and verification.

Arab countries that are members of the IAEA have complained that Israel's alleged nuclear weapons program is not being investigated, at a time when countries like Iran are under intense scrutiny from the UN agency.

ElBaradei said in an interview in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz in December that Israel should give up its nuclear arsenal.

He called for discussions to be engaged between Israel and its regional neighbours in order to establish a de-nuclearized zone and avoid further development of weapons of mass destruction.

"My fear is that without such a dialogue, there will be continued incentive for the region's countries to develop weapons of mass destruction to match the Israeli arsenal," ElBaradei told the liberal Israeli daily.

Gafni reiterated that Israel's policy was to "neither deny nor confirm" that it has nuclear weapons.

She said this policy would "not change in the very near future".

Israel has never acknowledged having a nuclear arsenal but foreign experts believe it has produced between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads.

Happy birthday to you Saddam !
04.29.04 (3:31 am)   [edit]

The former Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein was born 67 years ago from today. Maybe is it the best birthday he has ever had ? While during his regime, his birthday was the occasion of many festivities in the whole country, now, there is nobody to think at him, except in Mossoul, where he's still popular.
For his birthday, Saddam has received a visit of the Red Cross, but it seems it was only a coincidence.

Halliburton's amount of total sales increased of 80% thanks to Iraq
04.29.04 (3:23 am)   [edit]
For the first quarter of 2004, Halliburton has seen its amount of totals sales increasing of 80%, thanks to Iraq's oil and services to the US army in Iraq (powering, mail, etc.). These activities represent $7,6 billions only for the first quarter of 2004. They were representing $3,6 billions in 2003.
In the same time, 34 Halliburton's employees have been killed in Iraq, and 3 are reported missing.

Calligraffiti takes art of Islam into new realm of contemporary form
04.28.04 (11:55 am)   [edit]
«LONDON: A new exhibition by the painter Wijdan - the artist's name of H.R.H. Princess Wijdan Ali of Jordan - a member of the Jordanian Royal family and a first cousin to the late King Hussein, in collaboration with the Lebanese poet Charbel Dagher, has been drawing plenty of praise from spectators at London's October Gallery. Entitled Calligraffiti, the exhibition sees Wijdan illustrating the poems of Dagher through calligraphy, resulting in a visually resplendent series of works that skillfully weave together the worlds of poetry and calligraphy, and in so doing create a new form of artistic expression.

Calligraphy has long been synonymous with Islamic art, dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. While the Koran does not expressly forbid representational art, Islamic art has generally avoided the intense figurative tradition of European painting and sculpture with its many representations of the body of Christ, turning instead to the text of the Koran as its primary source of inspiration.

Consequently, Islamic art has focused more heavily on abstract and elaborate decorative systems.

In Calligraffiti we witness how these calligraphic traditions can be inverted and transformed to create an art form at once sensual, modern and classical.»

Should we read Mein Kampf freely ?
04.28.04 (10:30 am)   [edit]
This is the question asked by the German writer Raphael Seligmann, who is Jew, in the German newspaper Die Taz of April the 20th. The book is strictly forbidden in Germany, while it's not in others. However, I have never seen it in any bookstore of any kind in France. So this question is also valid for other countries, like France.

According to Seligmann, this interdiction is nothing but dishonesty, because the Baviara state, which owns the rights over Hitler's book, doesn't want the world to accuse Germans of being anti-Semite. After 2015, the book will be free of rights and everybody will be able to print it freely.

However, one must admit that we can find this anti-Semite book very easily on the internet, and in any language. We can also find it in some booksellers stores, who are selling original editions.

Seligmann is also asking another question, more important: the maturity of the German's. Can they read Mein Kampf without becoming anti-Semite ? For Seligmann, the answer is yes. For him, Mein Kampf will be a best-seller during about a month or two, and it will be forgotten again. But this book is the best evidence of Hitler's anti-Semite theories for those who deny it.

The truth about Gaddafi's reconciliation with the rest of the world
04.28.04 (4:34 am)   [edit]
If you were among those who think that Gaddafi wants to be nice and stops to be a bad man, I would say that you're wrong. The truth about why Gaddafi wishes to reconciliate with the world is simple. Just look:

He needs a new wardrobe ! He couldn't change it since 30 years at least I think ! Or maybe has he bad tastes in addition to be a bad man ?

Terrorist attack in Amman: doubts
04.28.04 (4:19 am)   [edit]
You have certainly heard about the failed attack in Amman this month by a terrorist group closed to Zarqaoui and al-Qa`ida. The Jordanian TV has showed some of the terrorists and of the 20 tons of chemical outbursts. According to this TV, the 20 tons could have killed 80.000 people and injured 160.000 people. The targets were the US embassy and some Jordanian officials.

What seems to be strange is the number of casualties this attack could have done. Why killing so much people if the targets were defined ? When we know that most of the Jordanian population is in fact Palestinian, you can doubt of this information.

Le Figaro, a French newspaper, is confirming my doubts. Some specialists are contradicting the reality of the 80.000 people that could have been killed by this attack. This information is either a lying advertisement for Jordanian secret services, or an information brought by inefficient people, a specialist said in the French newspaper. The chemical agents used by these terrorists are no military but industrial (sulfuric acid), and this is really different. This type of chemical agent is too volatile too kill 80.000 people. It could make a chemical cloud only.

All in all, we can also wonder how these terrorists have been able to find 20 tons of chemical agents so easily ? I'm sure this is to be continued.

Israel dictatorship and colonialism over Palestinians
04.25.04 (11:31 am)   [edit]
After Sharon threatened by 3 times at least Yasser Arafat, now the version is changing. Israeli government is no more decided to kill the Palestinian president but only to set him off from the West Bank to Gaza. Have you ever seen that from a democratic state ? Not me. Israel is more and more acting as a colonialist state towards Palestine and its inhabitants.

«A senior source in Sharon's office said Israel was examining different plans of action against Arafat. "One option is to expel him to Gaza," the source said without giving details.»

Yasser Arafat has been elected through democratic elections, checked by foreign organizations. Israel wants to attack a legitimate and legal President. If there's something wrong with Arafat and if he's accused of something, why an international court doesn't judge him ? The truth is that Sharon also has blood on his hands, and that he also deserves to be judged by a court. In all the case, we can't accuse Arafat of something as long as he's not convinced with certitude of a crime by an international court. This is a basis of democracy and an article of the Human Rights Declaration voted in 1948.

US presidential election for the rest of the world
04.25.04 (10:46 am)   [edit]
I told you before: we're not so far from the time when we will ask French citizens whom president of the USA they will vote for. Internet has made it possible, through a new website, «The US Election for the Rest of The World.» After all, this is not so silly. The USA, as the first world power, uses it over (against ?) every citizen of the world. What do we think about this election, which isn't ours, but concerns us anyway ? For whom would you vote for if you were an American citizen ? These questions will find an answer on the site The US Election for the Rest of The World.

At this time, it's Ralph Nader who is the favourite of the world's citizens with a rate of 53%, and after him, Kerry (42%) and Bush (4%).
You'll have also the possibility to choose which candidate you'd have wished to see participating to this election among four celebrities (Michael Moore, Oprah, etc.)
Nice idea, isn't it ?

Good news, bad news
04.23.04 (2:27 pm)   [edit]
A nice event: the OCI (Organization of Islamic Conference) has taken some good decisions.

«OIC also agreed to form a Ministers delegation that will be charged with taking the issue of Palestine to other international organizations as well as the U.N. Security Council. A declaration supporting the Palestine people and the leadership of Yasser Arafat demanded the formation of an international watch mechanism or the deployment of a Peacekeeping force in order to implement the Road Map.»

That's the good news. And the bad news:

«On the other hand, U.S. President George W. Bush said Thursday that whole world should thank Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, whose unilateral plan aims for the complete separation of the Israeli and Palestinian communities. Bush defended that the Sharon plan is a big compromise for Palestinians

Hmm now, don't know if it's a bad news or a joke. It's a joke for sure ! It can't be a real news. Dubya is so funny sometimes, like when he says there was nuclear weapons in Iraq.

By the way, I have a question: should we still thank Sharon when he threats Arafat (look at the news)? Is is a "big compromise" too ? Of course ! Because Sharon is joking, isn't it ?

Human Rights seen by a muslim cleric
04.23.04 (6:16 am)   [edit]
A muslim cleric have condemned Riyadh yesterday's attempts, claimed by the al-Haramain brigades. This could be a good news, if this condemnation wasn't only to implicitly legitimize attempts against non-muslims.

«The condemnation of Wednesday's attack came from the kingdom's highest religious authority, Grand Mufti Sheik Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheik.

"God has promised wrath, damnation, painful torture and an eternity burning in hell for he who deliberately kills a Muslim. . . . Unjustly killing a Muslim is the gravest crime which cannot be atoned," he said in a statement.

"I tell all Muslims that this act is a sin; it is one of the greatest sins. Aiding, calling for, or facilitating the murder of a Muslim is tantamount to involvement in murder, and all who do so will be thrown by God into the flames of hell," the sheik said.»

This point of view is not the whole muslim's one. All murders must be condemned in the same way, and there is no difference between a muslim, a jew, a christian, or an atheist. There are above all human beings.

Fights against terrorism is making progress...
04.22.04 (4:40 pm)   [edit]
...in Algeria. Pratically 300 terrorists who were hiding away have surrendered. This is a success for the government, who has successfully fought against terrorists located in the Algerian brush. Most of them belonged to the GSPC (Salafist groups for predication and fight), an extremist islamic group, weakened by infighting and killing of their most important members. The government is also negociating with some phalanx of the GSPC in order to make them surrender.

Mujahed Abu Awad, 20, was murdered by the IDF in Occupied Al Khalil (Hebron) during the IDF attack on the Al Fawar refugee camp (see below). Ha'aretz indicated that he was unarmed.

The clinically dead Jamal Khariosh, 20, was turned over to Dr. Hassan Barqawe of Jericho hospital by the Israeli District Coordination Office (DCO). Khariosh had earlier been shot by IDF snipers in Tulkarem, where he worked, and then was abducted by the IDF from Dr. Thabet Thabet hospital in Tulkarem where he was in critical condition after being shot by the Israeli snipers in the head and chest. Who are the terrorists' targets ?
04.22.04 (4:12 am)   [edit]
When I see some of my friends here in France complaining about terrorism and the fact that it affects westerners most of the time, I'm going crazy.

Of course, terrorism targets westerners too, but are they the victims' majority ? I don't think so if I trust the news.

«Suicide bombers killed at least 68 people, 17 of them children incinerated in minibuses taking them to school, in co-ordinated strikes on police stations in Basra, Iraq yesterday.»

» Gulf Daily News

This is not the first time Iraqi die since the beginning of US occupation. Many Iraqi who collaborates with Americans have died because of terrorists. Being a policeman in Iraq requires to feel up to do it. Can we read of hear somewhere a westerner journalist making a tribute to these men and women who are risking their life for freedom ? No, we're only speaking about terrorists.

But, yesterday again, another "evil" country has been attacked by some terrorists.

«RIYADH, 22 April 2004 — At least four people, including two security officers, were killed and 148 injured when a powerful car bomb devastated buildings of special security forces and the traffic department here yesterday. The vehicle exploded at a protective barrier outside the buildings, destroying dozens of other vehicles, damaging shops and property in a building across the road, and shattering windows over a wide area.»

» Arab News

But who cares about them ? Anyhow, they're only "Arabs", and terrorists are also "Arabs", or at least "muslims"...

I would like you to think about all the victims of terrorism, Arabs and non-Arabs, because they're equal in their suffering. Does an Israeli suffer more than a Palestinian ? I don't think so. 200,000 innocent people died in Algeria because of terrorism, and this is just an example. And nobody was here to help them. Because they're just "Arabs"...

Will Poland defect in Iraq ?
04.21.04 (12:13 pm)   [edit]
After Spain, Honduras, and Dominican Republic, Poland reconsiders its help to the coalition. Day after day, the coalition seems to crumble a little bit more, and this is like a sanction to the White House's policy.

«A government official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters Poland was ready to keep its troops in Iraq until the end of 2004 but wanted to cut numbers from the current 2,500

Poland's government seems to be under pressure, and would prefer withdrawing its troops from Iraq instead of risking a terrorist attack.

Some planes "driven off the road"...
04.20.04 (3:09 pm)   [edit]
Is it christmas or what? Bush's administration never stops receiving presents from everywhere, everybody, all along. The new one is a revelation of the NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense) about conducted exercises with «hijacked airliners used as weapons to crash into targets and cause mass casualties»... Does it make you remember something?

«One of the imagined targets was the World Trade Center. (...) In a third scenario, the target was the Pentagon.»

Quite embarrassing...

«Numerous types of civilian and military aircraft were used as mock hijacked aircraft (...) These exercises tested track detection and identification; scramble and interception; hijack procedures; internal and external agency coordination and operational security and communications security procedures.»

Of course, Bush's administration wasn't aware of such exercises. At least, that's what they try to make us believe:

«Nobody in our government, at least, and I don't think the prior government, could envision flying airplanes into buildings on such a massive scale,» President Bush said at a news conference Tuesday

The show must go on in Palestine
04.20.04 (2:51 pm)   [edit]
While Israeli occupation is more and more rigid, Palestinians are organizing the European Film Festival in the West Bank (Ramallah) at Al-Kasaba theater and cinematheque. 28 European movies from Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Britain and Austria are planned for this uncommon festival.

Some Palestinians consider that it's not the right time to focus on this type of activities. However, George Ibrahim, director-general of Al-Kasaba Theater and Cinematheque, disagrees:

«This is the right time for such cultural events. Life must go on and culture is an essential element for a normal life. We resist occupation but at the same time we have to live our normal life.»

For festival coordinator Khalid Elyyan, this festival is a message of hope for the 3 millions of Palestinians who can not take advantage of such leisures because of the occupation:

«With this festival we are trying to overcome all Israeli roadblocks and checkpoints in order to convey the message that if they build a concrete wall, we build a culture that is much stronger and higher than the wall. By bringing Europe into Ramallah, we prove that we can cross over the wall.»

Supported by the European Union, this festival is a way to escape from occupation, because the last four years were dramatic for Palestinian culture:

«The European commission has always been and is encouraging cultural dialogue between different civilizations and promoting cooperation between the EU and its Mediterranean partners and therefore, we supported this film festival as part of this policy and to introduce European culture and cinema to the Palestinian audience trying to revive the cultural life in Palestine» says Alfonso Garrigosa, second secretary at the European Commission Technical Assistance Office to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

Most of the time, Palestinian are coming numerous to such events, but there is an exception:

«The absence of out-of-towners in the audience due to the Israeli closures on Palestinian cities.»

I find important to add that Palestinians have the highest literacy rate in the Arabic world, even when they're refugees. Contrariwise to what some propaganda would like us to believe, Palestinians have a real cultural life and are not bloodthirsty animals.

Israeli's army gala support: shameful
04.20.04 (1:33 pm)   [edit]
After many protestations, associations for peace in the Middle-East managed to impede a gala in order to support the Israeli's army in Paris.
A Jewish association named "Welfare of the Israeli soldier association" is organizing every year a gala and collect funds for the Israeli army. This is a shameful operation and has nothing to do in France, or everywhere else. This is also a way to legitimize war and Israeli action against Palestinians since Intifida al-Aqsa, during which more than 3.000 Palestinians and less than 1.000 Israeli died.
This association tries to organize this gala once again, but this time in Marseille, in the South of France. Associations for peace want to empede again this manifestation which is supposed to happen on May the 16th. If you want to support this action, you can contact the persons involved in this fight by clicking on the link.
